Former Boise State standout and Melbourne United guard Iggy Hadziomerovic is re-uniting with his former Australian junior team-mate Dan Trist for the Frankston RSL Blues 2019 Basketball Victoria managed NBL1 campaign.
Hadziomerovic, who spent the 2016/17 season with Melbourne in the NBL, explained that he was excited for the opportunity to play under head coach Andrew Harms and with his former AIS team-mate Trist.
“I never even thought that I’d be playing for Frankston,” explained Hadziomerovic who grew up playing against the Blues as a junior in the VJBL.
“I actually played on a team that toured China with Harmsy [Harms] when I was 16! It’s good to link with him again. I like the culture and what they [Harms and his coaching staff] are doing.”
“We are really excited about getting Iggy [Hadziomeroivc] onboard for 2019,” stated Andrew Harms in announcing Hadziomerovic as his latest signing.
“We absolutely love his ability to compete at both ends of the floor and he never takes a play off. On top of playing with real intent, he provides us with fliexbility as he can play 1-2 in our league and can be a real match-up problem for opposotion coaches.”
While Hadziomerovic acknowledged the move to the Blues was a big one, he outlined that not only did he believe he would be able to improve his game under Harms’ direction, but be able to help Frankston’s on-court resurgence.
“I’m constantly looking to improve my game,” said Hadziomerovic.
“I’m enjoying being part of a high performance, professional environment, with great coaching staff. We have some great resources available to improve my body, with my diet and training. Helping me improve my game, my shooting and becoming a better overall player. The work we do at training will also help us deliver success to the court.”
Hadziomerovic was also looking forward linking with Trist, sharing that they enjoyed playing together for Australia at Under-19 level.
“It will be great to play with Dan again,” added Hadziomerovic.
“I’m pretty sure we played together the Under-19 Australian team back in 2011. I’m all healthy and feeling great too – it should be a lot of fun.”
Blues Chairman Chris Beattie was pleased to be able to add an Australian guard of the quality of Hadziomerovic to team with Blues import Damon Bozeman in the back court for the inaugural Basketball Victoria managed NBL1 season.
“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Iggy [Hadziomerovic] to the club,” said Beattie. “With three quality players in Damon [Bozeman], Dan [Trist] and now Iggy, we have a core trio that well help underpin the Blues drive towards bettering last season’s outcome.”
Last season in the SEABL, Hadziomerovic averaged a solid 12.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game for Sandringham as one of the Sabres best three performed players. He was a model of consistency too, scoring in double figures in 15 of the 18 games he played, providing leadership and stability to the Sabres back court. He has since madew a large impact in pre-season training already with his new team.
“He has slotted in perfectly into our club throughout the pre-season and shown his ability to lead through his action with our young up and coming Blues players,” added Harms. “We look forwqard to many successful years with Iggy in a Blues uniform.”
The prospect of playing in the new competition also excited Hadziomerovic, explaining that it was certainly driving a lot of interest and intrigue from both fans and the players alike.
“It will be very interesting obviously – a few of the stronger former Big V teams joining and the Tasmanian sides will make sure the league is strong. However I loved the SEABL and the travel interstate to play, but I’m still excited to see how it all goes.
“The most important thing for us is to build a good team culture early. With Dan, Damon and a few others [yet to be announced], we are hoping to make some serious noise. Making the playoffs will be a challenge, but our goal is to get there.”
Stay tuned for further player announcements over coming weeks.
