SE Melbourne Phoenix’s Debut in China
The NBL’s relationship with China continues to grow, and it’s the league’s newest team that’ll be reaping the rewards of it.
The South East Melbourne Phoenix will play a pair of games in China, ahead of their inaugural season in the NBL.
Simon Mitchell’s team will face the Jiangsu Dragons in Nanjing on May 29, before taking on the Shanghai Sharks in Shanghai on May 31.
The Phoenix have had a busy free agency, signing a flurry of Australian talent – highlighted by Mitch Creek – as well as one import, Tai Wesley, and the team is expected to announce its squad for this tour soon.
“As a club, we would like to thank the NBL and the Victorian Government for the opportunity to play in China,” Phoenix general manager, Tommy Greer, said.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to play some games ahead of our first NBL game but also build our brand globally in a growing basketball market with strong ties to Victoria. The tour will also give us the opportunity to evaluate some young local talent.”
The tour is part of a collaboration between the NBL and the Victorian Government, with the aim to expose the state’s sporting acumen in one of the biggest markets in the world.
“The NBL has a growing presence in China, with club and the NBL All-Stars team tours in recent years, as well as NBL games broadcast live to China,” NBL CEO, Jeremy Loeliger, said.
“This is an opportunity to continue to build those links and also provide our newest team South East Melbourne Phoenix a chance to promote their brand globally in a huge basketball market.”
