HADZIOMEROVIC BACK FOR 3 YEARS
By Damian Arsenis.
After falling just one win short of the 2019 NBL1 grand final, Frankston RSL Blues Men captain Igor Hadziomerovic is determined to lead his club to a championship next season and will return for their 2020 campaign.
In a show of confidence in the Blues senior program, Hadziomerovic has signed on for a further three years, a deal that will see him play through to the end of the 2022 season.
“I’m excited,” shared Hadziomerovic in announcing his commitment to the Blues. “I spoke to Harmsy [Andrew Harms] and he was keen to have me back and we were looking at a two year deal. However I explained I was here for the long term, and we were able to extend it to three years.”
Haziomerovic enjoyed a career year with the Blues in 2019. The versatile guard provided a reliable 15 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, while shooting 51% from inside the three-point arc, and an impressive 42% beyond it. He earned selection to the NBL1 All-Star team that recently participated in the NBL Blitz in Tasmania, an event in which his side lost to Cairns and Brisbane.
However Hadziomerovic does not play for the accolades, he is firmly focused on team success, explaining that there was a sense of unfinished business after going so close to the NBL1 championship this past season, with the preliminary final loss to Bendigo still hurting.
“It was a rough way to end the season,” explained Hadziomerovic on the Blues’ worst offensive performance of the year against the Braves. “The group is quite hungry to make amends.”
Bendigo would eventually fall to Nunawading in the championship game, and Hadziomerovic was well aware of just how close the Blues were to a possible championship in 2019. He outlined that coach Andrew Harms and the playing group were already focused on making the adjustments necessary to go all the way in 2020.
“We are trying to work on bridging all the gaps in the background. We are building on the groundwork laid this past season, and if we can add a few pieces, we will be back to have another crack.
“Full credit to Bendigo on a great run. The week off for us took away our momentum, and the experience will only help our group moving forward, and hopefully go all the way next season.”
